The History of Richmond Hill
Richmond Hill dates back years before 1769, although the earliest date of existence is unknown. In 1769, Colonel John Harleston purchased the tract of land, which included Richmond and Farmfield Plantations, from Dr. Martine. Harleston made Richmond his home. Then in 1793, when Harleston died, the property was divided and the Richmond parcel was passed down to Harleston’s daughter, Jane. Jane was married to Edward Rutledge.
Richmond later passed to Harleston's granddaughter, Sarah Harleston and her husband Dr. Benjamin Huger. In 1900, J. St. Clair White purchased a total of 4,500 acres which included Richmond, Bossis, Farmfield, and Villa plantations. Sometime around the turn of the century, the main house on the property burned down.
In the late 1920s, George A. Ellis, Jr. purchased the property to develop it into a hunting retreat and built the house that stands today. At this point, the combined plantations were simply called “Richmond Plantation.” In 1956, after the death of Mrs. Ellis, the property was sold to West Virginia Paper and Pulp Company, now MeadWestvaco Corporation.
In 1963, The Girl Scouts of Carolina Lowcountry, now Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina, purchased 153 acres including the acreage where the Richmond Plantation house stands. The plantation was used as a Girl Scout camp. Then in 2013, Charleston businessman Michael Bennett purchased Richmond Plantation to be used as a private estate and renamed it “Richmond Hill.”
